The board of commissioners leads the county government—passing legislation and administering services and programs. Commissioners approve budgets, hire staff, and set policy. The board may elect some of its members to leadership positions, such as president or chairperson, which are usually held for one-year terms.
Application GuidelinesIf you would like to be included on the ballot for county office, follow these three steps. 1) Contact the county board of elections. The elections department can provide information about the availability of filing papers and answer questions regarding nominating petitions and other ballot procedures. 2) Arrange to pick up required paperwork. 3) Return your completed paperwork within the designated filing window. The filing deadline listed is for third party and unaffiliated candidates. Candidates who wish to be run as part of a major party must meet earlier deadlines in order to participate in the primary election.
